Utterly delightful Bond romp with Tatsuya Mihashi as our International Secret Police Man and Makoto Satō as a police detective and his partner/competitor both in solving the crime and wooing the girls. A scientist is kidnapped for his invention that can explode bombs still in their silos, and his beautiful daughter (Yuriko Hoshi) needs help. The gang are a group of assassins with retractable knife blades in their sleeves and cyanide gas cartridges that they can kiss into your mouth. Kumi Mizuno is the bad girl who eventually betrays her wicked boss for a little of that spy lovin'. There are a lot of great bits that keep the plot moving along at a fast and lighthearted pace, like when…

The third entry of Toho's International Secret Police series and from the same director who brought us that one live-action Lupin the Third film, A Keg of Powder marks a drastic tonal shift for the series from the fairly straight-laced spy stories of the first two entries to full on outlandish super spy antics.
I feel like this change in tone was largely down to Shinichi Sekizawa handling the script this time and the appointment of Takashi Tsuboshima as director, mostly more well-known for his more comedic movies. The film has a very dark sense of humour in places but works well considering that Sekizawa makes sure to balance it with some well-rounded and lighter jokes; coupled with Tsuboshima's direction…

Now that is more like it! Makoto Sato returns, and finally this one slides into the comedic tone I was hoping for! So far, this is my favorite entry in the INTERNATIONAL SECRET POLICE series.
I’m still not totally sold on Tatsuya Mihashi as the lead. He’s totally sufficient in his role as the James Bond-type smarmy spy hero, but I guess he’s not really distinct enough to really grab me. Still, he works fine, and is backed up by an excellent cast, as usual. Besides Sato, there are a few other returning players including Kumi Mizuno, killing it as always, and Akiko Wakabayashi, who had a slightly more interesting role than she had previously. And ULTRAMAN’s Masaya Nihei joins…
